Quick trip to Chengdu. Yesterday we visited a panda reserve and today we saw the world’s tallest Buddha.
Just realized that we haven’t posted anything from out adventures in Hong Kong for New Years. We spent 5 days there and had a great time. What a wonderful city. Some highlights: The train up to Victoria Peak, the Star Ferry, the gondola ride up to the Big Buddha, Ocean Park, the stewardess led exercises on the airplane, the night market, and the lounge at the JW Marriott.
We’re in Chicago for the weekend. I’m told by the hotel staff that our room is a “Chicago view room”. It is a lovely room, but the view is only a brick wall.
We had an exciting trip down from Ann Arbor on the way to Pittsburgh for Thanksgiving. We were traveling along the highway and all of a sudden the traffic slowed down right ahead of us. As we stopped, just a few cars ahead, we could see a tanker pulled over on the side of the road. And it was on fire!
Smoke was billowing and flames were shooting out from underneath the tanker. We had no idea what was in the tanker. After a minute or two, a guy next to us was on the phone with 911 and they told us to evacuate the cars and get away. Apparently, the tanker was full of ethanol.
Things got a little crazy then. Some serious panicking from people. We grabbed the kids and dog and bailed out and hustled away from the fire. We got a safe distance away and things relaxed a bit. We didn’t have a leash for Morgan and the kids were just wearing their clothes. One person loaned us a scarf for a leash and another loaned us a snuggie to keep the kids warm.
While we were getting away from the fire, Johannes grabbed his camera and went towards the fire to capture the moment. Yeah, he went the wrong direction.
After a few minutes the fire trucks and cops showed up and they put the fire out rather quickly. Since our car was right at the front, we were back on the road in about 30 minutes from when the craziness started. I imagine that the folks that were back a few miles were stuck there for many hours.
